A stone countertop project has more steps than most people expect, and knowing them ahead of time makes the whole thing calmer. We handle selection, templating, fabrication and installation, with a layout review before anything is cut. Here’s how it unfolds and what you can do to keep it moving.

Steps, from showroom
to installation
- Showroom visit and estimateBring photos, cabinet drawings if you have them, and ideas. We’ll talk through your space, the stone options and what shapes the estimate.
- Choose your slabWalk the slabs in person. Color, veining and movement look different in real light than on a screen, and you’ll approve the slab for your job before anything is cut.
- Templating at your homeSomeone visits to measure your cabinets and record sink, cooktop and overhang details.
- Layout reviewBefore cutting, you see how the slab will be laid out, including where seams and veining will fall, and you approve it.
- FabricationYour stone is cut, shaped and finished to the template, including edges and cutouts.
- InstallationInstallers set the pieces, make the seams, protect your floors and clean up when they’re done.
Templating
Getting Ready for Templating
Templating works best when the cabinets are installed, level and secured, since the template follows them exactly. Have your sink and faucet selected before the visit, along with the cooktop or range if it drops in or slides in. Undermount sinks and cooktops affect the cutouts, so the actual model matters more than a general idea.
Decide on your edge profile and backsplash height if you can. A full-height backsplash or a waterfall end changes the layout, so it’s easier to settle those early. If you’re not sure, ask us during the visit and we’ll walk through the choices. Clear the countertops and the area under the sink so measuring goes smoothly.

Layout review
Why the Layout Review Matters
Stone isn’t a uniform sheet. A bold vein can run beautifully across an island or land awkwardly at a seam. Reviewing the layout lets you see those decisions before the stone is cut, and it’s the one chance to move things around. If a cabinet size changes during a remodel, tell us right away; sometimes a different or matching slab is needed to cover the new dimensions.
Installation day
What to Expect on Installation Day
The crew will confirm the layout against your cabinets, set each piece, join seams with color-matched adhesive and fit the sink and cooktop cutouts. Installation takes place at your home, so plan for some noise and for access through your entry. Clear a path from the door to the kitchen, and move fragile items away from the work zone. Installers cover and protect floors as they work. Look over the finished tops before the crew wraps up, and point out anything you want checked.
Removal of existing countertops is a common question. Ask us about removal of existing tops when you request your estimate, so we can tell you what’s involved for your home. Plumbing and electrical disconnects for sinks and appliances are usually handled by a plumber or your contractor.
Aftercare
After Installation
Natural stone like granite, quartzite and marble is typically sealed after install and again periodically; quartz and porcelain don’t need sealing. Use trivets for hot pans, a cutting board for knives and pH-neutral cleaners for daily wiping. How much should countertop installation cost?
It depends on the stone, the square footage, edge profile, number of cutouts, seams, backsplash and the access to your home. We don’t publish ranges because they mislead, but our blog post on countertop cost in Fort Myers lays out the factors so you can plan.
Do countertop installers remove old countertops?
Often, but it depends on the existing material and your project. Ask us when you request an estimate, and we’ll explain what removal involves and who handles plumbing disconnects.
What is someone who installs countertops called?
Usually a countertop installer, or a stone fabricator when the same company also cuts and finishes the slabs. Fabricators shape stone to a template; installers set it in your home. At HB, the work covers fabrication and installation.
